How to Start Journaling if you are a beginner

Let me be honest with you. I avoided journaling for a long time because I thought I had to do it a certain way.

Like, there was some secret formula I was missing. Some perfect journal. Some perfect time of day. Some perfectly poetic thing to say on the page.

Spoiler: there is not.

Journaling is one of the simplest, most powerful things you can do for yourself. And if you have been putting it off because you do not know where to start, this one is for you.

First, Let Go of What You Think Journaling Should Look Like

It does not have to be long. It does not have to be pretty. It does not have to make sense.

Some days I write a full page. Some days I write three words and close it. Both count.

The goal is not to be a great writer. The goal is to get out of your head and onto the page. That is it. That is the whole thing.

Start Small. Like, Really Small.

If sitting down to journal feels overwhelming, you are making it bigger than it needs to be in your head.

Start with five minutes. Set a timer. Open the journal. Write whatever comes out. It might be messy, scattered, and completely random. That is fine. Actually, that is kind of the point.

You are not writing a memoir. You are just checking in with yourself.

Use Prompts if You Do Not Know What to Write

Staring at a blank page is not fun for anyone. That is exactly why I created the Take Up Space™ Journal with guided prompts built right in.

Prompts give you a starting point. They do the hard part of getting you going so you can stop overthinking and just write.

Some of my favorites to get you started:

What is taking up the most space in my head right now?

What do I need more of this week?

What is one thing I keep putting off and why?

What would it feel like to actually show up for myself today?

Pick one. Write. See what comes up.

Be Consistent, Not Perfect

Some days you will feel inspired. Some days it will feel like a chore. Show up anyway.

Journaling is not about having something profound to say every single time. It is about building a relationship with yourself. And like any relationship, it grows with consistency, not perfection.

Miss a day? Pick it back up. No guilt. No long explanation to yourself. Just open the journal and keep going.

Get a Journal That Actually Supports You

This is not me telling you that you need a fancy journal to get started. A notebook from the dollar section works just fine.

But if you want something that walks you through the process, gives you structure without boxing you in, and was designed for the woman who is balancing a lot and still trying to grow, the Take Up Space™ Journal was literally made for that.

It has guided daily pages, monthly and quarterly reflection prompts, mental health check-ins, and habit tracking. Everything you need to get out of your head and into your life.

You Are More Ready Than You Think

You do not need to feel ready to start. You just need to start.

Open the page. Write something. Even if it is just "I do not know what to write." That counts. You showed up.

And that is always enough to begin.

You have got this. Now go take up some space.
